Tips for Safe Snow Removal

Removing snow from around the outside of your home is crucial if you want to get out and about safely. Before you attempt to remove snow from your home or property, read over these tips for safe snow removal.

Shoveling snow

Before you ever pick up a snow shovel, make sure you are in good enough health to engage in heavy physical activity. Shoveling snow can be hard work, and if you aren’t in good physical shape, you could end up injuring yourself.

Wear clothing that will keep you warm and allow you to move freely. This may mean dressing in layers to stay warm and agile.

When possible, push the snow rather than lifting it. This puts less strain on your back and makes the job a little easier.

Use kitty litter or de-icing salt to get better traction while shoveling snow.

Removing roof snow

Avoid climbing on your roof to remove the snow. It could be icy, which would make walking around on the roof dangerous. Instead, try to remove the snow while standing on the ground.

Work with a buddy. This way, if you have to use a ladder to reach the edge of your roof, you’ll have someone to hold the ladder steady, and help you if you fall or are covered by falling snow.

Try raking or brushing snow off of the roof from ground level, but don’t stand directly underneath the area being brushed. Even small amounts of snow and ice can be very heavy and can hurt you if they land on you.

Snowfall can be beautiful, but it can also be dangerous, especially if you aren’t careful when dealing with snow removal. Take your time, and be safe, so you can enjoy the beauty of the snow without the danger.
