Things you need to know before installing a new lock

Whether you’re looking to update the look of your home’s doors or improve their security, changing the locks is a great idea. Before you buy and install any new locks, keep a few things in mind.

What type of door is it for?

Interior doors don’t require the same type of lock that exterior doors do, so you’ll need to bear this in mind when choosing a lock. Deadbolts and tumbler locks are usually used on exterior locks because they are more powerful, while lever locks tend to be used on interior doors.

How high tech do you want to go?

Today’s locks range from traditional deadbolts to biometric scanner locks and several different types in between. Most homeowners stick with the tried and true, but if you want something like a smart lock, you may want to have a locksmith help install it.

Who’ll be using the lock?

If you have family members who need to unlock your doors when you’re not there, you could just make multiple copies of the lock’s key. Or, you may want to consider a smart lock that can be opened remotely from your cellphone. These are great if you have pet sitters or house cleaners who need access to your home while you’re out because you don’t have to give out copies of your key. In many cases, you can simply give a code to the person who needs to enter your home, then change the code as needed.

How difficult is the lock to install?

If you’re replacing an existing lock with a similar one, you may be able to do it yourself, but if you’re putting in an entirely new type of lock, you may need the help of a professional locksmith. An incorrectly installed lock is not only a security issue, it could be a safety issue since the lock could stick in an emergency such as a fire. Unless you’re sure you know what you’re doing, have a locksmith take care of the installation for you.
