Summer Road Safety Tips

Summer is the perfect time to hit the road and enjoy a drive to destinations unknown. The summer road trip is a great tradition, but if you want to enjoy yourself, you need to stay safe. Here are some summer road trip safety tips to help you stay safe and sound on your next road trip.

Pack a first aid kit

In fact, you should do this all year round, not just for road trips. Pack bandages, antiseptic ointment, alcohol swabs and some over-the-counter pain medication. Also include a list of phone numbers for your doctor and other health professionals. You never know when you might need to call them during a road trip for medical advice.

Bring water and a flashlight

If you happen to break down during the night, a flashlight could save your life. Water is important not only for drinking, but clean water can be used to rinse off minor cuts and scrapes you might get when trying to fix your car. To be on the safe side, take your car in for a service before the road trip, so you can top up fluids and make sure it’s in shipshape for the long journey.

Pack snacks and take breaks

If you’re travelling with kids, be sure to pack plenty of snacks and drinks for them, and stop frequently to allow for bathroom breaks. These breaks are good for the driver, too, because a little stretching can help fight off fatigue and help keep you sharp for your drive.

Secure your pets

If you plan on travelling with your pet, make sure you secure it in a carrier or other device. Unsecured pets could become injured if you have to brake suddenly, and they can injure your human passengers if they are thrown into them during a sudden stop.
