Prepare your Car for Winter Road Conditions

It may seem as though fall has barely arrived, but winter will be here before you know it, and with it comes some pretty nasty winter roads. Make sure your car is ready for wintery roads with these simple to use tips.

Top up your antifreeze

When the temperature drops, antifreeze is supposed to help protect your car from the dangerous temperatures. Antifreeze is inexpensive and can prevent the water in your radiator from freezing, preventing it from cooling the engine and potentially leading to thousands of dollars’ worth of damages. Top up your antifreeze and change your oil at the same time, and make a habit of it.

Get new brakes, if you need them

If you’ve been considering new brakes or brake pads, get them before winter sets in. Stopping in icy weather is more difficult, and it puts more strain on your braking system. Don’t risk a complete brake failure on winter roads; have them maintained before you need to.

Keep your gas tank full

If your gas tank goes below halfway full in cold weather, condensation could form, causing the car to run less efficiently. You also don’t want to risk running out of gas on icy or snowy roads, and you may not be able to get to a gas station at all in the middle of a storm, so keep the tank at least halfway full during the winter.

Break out the chains

Even if the forecast isn’t calling for tons of snow, keep your snow chains handy, just in case. It’s better to have them and not need them than it is to get stuck and have to wait in freezing weather to be rescued.

Be prepared

Keep blankets, water, flashlights and a basic first aid kit in your car at all times. If you do get stuck in a snowstorm, you’ll be better equipped to handle the situation.
