Keep Your Home Secure During Summer Vacations

Summer vacations are the perfect time to shed your stress and enjoy yourself, but a relaxing vacation is no good if you come home to a break-in. Before you go on vacation, make sure you keep your home secure while you’re away.

Lock every door and window

Don’t leave any door or window unlocked, because this just makes it easy for a thief to gain access. If you have a neighbor dropping by while you’re gone (to check on things), give them a key. If you happen to have the new digital locks in your home, you can simply arrange to unlock the house from wherever you are so they can get inside.

Consider cameras

Security cameras aren’t just for shops; home security cameras are a great way to keep burglars away. You can set some cameras up outside your home as a visual deterrent, and you can set some up inside your home as an added security measure. Stream the feed to your computer, and some can even be accessed from a mobile device, so you can check on the house while you’re away.

Don’t advertise your absence

Most breakins are done without planning. An empty house is an easy target for a thief who is looking to get in and out quickly. Make your home appear occupied by putting a few lights and even the television on a timer, so they go on and off at preset times. This can make your house look occupied, and frighten away thieves.

Also, tell a trusted neighbour that you’ll be gone, and ask them to watch out for any suspicious characters near your home. Don’t advertise your absence on social media, because this is just like advertising that you have a vulnerable, empty home just waiting to be burglarized.
