Keep your car safe on the coldest days

Keep your car safe on the coldest days

It is safe to say that nobody likes the feeling of getting into a car that hasn’t had the heat on for an extended period of time. As creatures of habit, year after year many of us gravitate to popping outside in the morning, starting the car up, and then heading back inside for a few minutes to finish our morning routines while waiting for the heat to kick on inside the car.

While this act of convenience has kept many of us from feeling the shock of a cold steering wheel or leather seats, it also comes with some inherent risks.  Not only is it an infraction against the idling bylaws that many Ontario municipalities have (most cities have a one-minute restriction with fines reaching up to $120), but turning your car on to let it heat up also puts you at risk for having your vehicle stolen.

  • Do not leave your vehicle running, with the keys in the ignition unattended.
  • Do not leave your vehicle running where the vehicle has been started with a keyless ignition or push-button start unattended
  • If you do need to start your vehicle remotely, use a remote starter and keep the vehicle locked
  • Utilize a steering wheel lock to make your vehicle less desirable to thieves.
  • Do not leave spare keys or garage door openers in or around your vehicle. To further this, always make sure that the door leading from your garage into the house is locked.
  • Do not leave children or pets inside a vehicle that is running. It goes without saying that having your car stolen is a horrible event, but a bad situation will be made even worse if a child or pet is taken through the theft of a vehicle.
  • Do not leave your valuables, including any documentation relating to identity (bank cards, health card, drivers licence, passports etc.) in the vehicle.
