Keep Safe in Your New Home

Do you know exactly who has a key to your new home? If you bought a house that was previously owned, there’s a very real chance that there are copies of your door key floating around somewhere, possibly in the hands of someone who could burglarize your home.

Most door locks come with two copies of the key as standard, but it’s not uncommon for homeowners to make copies to leave with neighbours, family members, or even babysitters. If they didn’t collect all of these copies and give them to you when they sold you the house, you are at risk of being robbed by a burglar who can simply unlock the door, walk in, and take what they want.

Even if your home is a newly constructed one, there’s a chance that contractors, builders, or any number of people who worked on the construction of your home have a copy of the key used to lock your doors.

If someone uses a key to burglarize your home, you may not be aware that you’ve been robbed for days or longer, and there’s always the possibility that the burglar will return to take more things at any time, unless you make it impossible for them to get back inside.

Your home is your castle, but if it’s not defended properly, you are putting your family and your belongings at risk. You may think that replacing the locks on your exterior doors is the only way to fully prevent former keyholders from gaining access to your home, but there are other options.

A professional locksmith can re-key your locks for you, making any old keys unusable in your door locks. If you’d still rather replace the locks, they can do that, too. The most secure locks for an entry door are those that use double-cylinder deadbolts. If not installed properly, even the best of these locks are ineffective against burglars, so it’s important that you at least have a professional locksmith check the lock before trusting it to keep your home safe.

When you buy a new home, the first thing you should do, before you ever bring any of your belongings inside, is to contact your local locksmiths, and let them make your new “castle” as safe as possible. You’ll rest easier knowing that no one else has a key to your home, and you can get on with enjoying your new home.
