Holiday Home Security Tips

Back to Home

During the holidays, it’s more important than ever that you remain vigilant about your home security. Burglars are particularly active during the holiday season, so use these holiday home security tips to outsmart them and keep your home and belongings safe.

Always lock your doors and windows

No matter how safe your neighbourhood appears, there is always a chance that a burglar is nearby, casing homes for potential targets. Any time you leave your house, make sure that all the doors and windows are locked. This will make your home less of an ‘easy target’ for burglars, who prefer to be in and out of a home quickly and quietly.

Consider installing an alarm

Alarms won’t prevent burglaries, but they will make your home less attractive to burglars. The goal of any burglar is to get in, get your belongings, and get out without being detected. An alarm makes that goal more difficult for them to achieve, and may keep your home a little safer.

Keep curtains drawn

This is especially important when you are not at home. Burglars can’t tell if you have anything worth stealing if you don’t advertise it by piling presents up near windows or leaving your curtains open to reveal the contents of your home.

Be careful what you throw away

Thieves are just as likely to target your home after Christmas, especially if you let them know that you’ve received expensive gifts over the holiday period. Don’t leave your empty boxes sitting on the curb for thieves to see. They’ll know exactly what you have in your home that is worth stealing, and they could target you because of them.

Also, be vigilant about identity theft. Never throw out credit card statements or information that thieves could use to steal your identity in the New Year.

Don’t advertise your absence

If you plan on being away from home over the holidays, don’t discuss it on social media, do tell a trusted neighbour so they can keep an eye on your home, and do set some lights on a timer, to make it hard to tell that the house is empty.

These easy to use home security tips will make your home a little more secure during the holidays, so you can enjoy peace of mind as well as a Merry Christmas.
