4 Things to Consider Before Buying a Home Safe

Buying a home safe is a great way to minimize your risk of loss due to theft, fire, or other disasters, but before you rush out to buy just any safe, you need to keep a few things in mind. Here are four things to consider before buying a safe for your home.

What do you want to store in the safe?

The contents of your safe will determine not only the size of the thing, but also the design. You wouldn’t want to buy an enormous safe just to store a few passports or pieces of jewelry, but you may want to consider buying one that is slightly larger than you need immediately in case you plan to put more items in later on.

If you plan on storing weapons, you’ll need a different type of safe than if you want to store jewelry or documents. Weapons safes are usually heavier than regular safes, so you need to bear that in mind when choosing a location for it.

Where do you plan to keep the safe?

Depending on the size of the safe, your choice of locations may be limited. Do you need it to be easily accessible, such as in your closet or bedroom? Would you rather keep in in a basement or attic? If you plan to keep the safe in an area that has the potential to be flooded, you’ll need to make sure that the safe is completely airtight so water can’t get in if the worst happens.

How much protection do you need?

Not every safe is fully water or fireproof. If you are trying to protect documents or other easily damaged valuables, you need to make sure that the safe you buy is designed with enough protection in case of a fire or flood. Your home may be more likely to be flooded or experience a fire than be burglarized, so buy a safe with adequate protection.

What’s your budget?

If you have a larger budget, you can afford to buy a larger safe with more ‘bells and whistle’. Biometric locks, fire resistance, and added locks all come with a price, so know what you can spend before you shop.
